Questions about employment under collective wage agreement

After the application deadline has passed, the selection committee tries its best to invite candidates to interviews as soon as possible. Due to semester breaks, public holidays or the selection committee’s busy schedule, invitations to interviews may be delayed in individual cases.

As a rule, all job offers are advertised for a minimum of three weeks. Therefore, please try to abide by the application deadline.

If the application deadline has passed, but you would still like to apply, please send your complete application documents to the appropriate contact person. We cannot guarantee that you will be included in the selection procedure after the application deadline has passed. However, we will be happy to clarify whether your application can still be considered in the selection procedure.

Questions about the UAS professorship

Since the structure of a professorship and its range of tasks can vary greatly, there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ day in the life of a professor. In every case, all professors are required to teach 18 hours per week. This includes supervising students in their term papers and theses, grading exams and any further development of the curriculum. Professors can also supervise and examine doctoral projects. Depending on their interests and field of expertise, they maintain contacts and collaborations with the private sector, hold positions in the university’s self-governing bodies, participate in committees, pursue research activities, acquire third-party funding in this context and take on leadership roles in their respective faculties.

Professors have a great deal of autonomy in determining the focus of these diverse and varied tasks. This means that they have considerable freedom in how they organise their time and can act largely independently, which many professors here greatly appreciate about their jobs. However, one thing that remains unalterable at universities of applied sciences is the high priority given to applied-science-oriented teaching.

No. A habilitation is not required for a professorship at a university of applied sciences.

Yes, the teaching obligation is usually 18 teaching hours per week during the semester. Upon request and by decision of the faculties, the teaching load may be reduced under certain circumstances. A reduction in teaching obligation is usually granted if the lecturer takes on special academic administrative duties or performs extensive research work. In addition, lecturers can take time out from their practical semester obligations for a research sabbatical in order to devote themselves intensively to a particular task for a longer period of time, if they want.

Yes, a UAS professorship also gives you the opportunity to pursue research activities – although usually to a much lesser extent than at universities.

Bremen City University of Applied Sciences was awarded the ‘Family-Friendly University’ seal in 2005. Flexible working hours and the option for part-time work and alternating telework are part of the framework conditions for UAS professorships at our university, as are childcare facilities on site with the respective internal service centres. Due to the high degree of autonomy in terms of working hours, a UAS professorship is very compatible with family responsibilities.

The range of subjects offered at Bremen City University of Applied Sciences is as diverse as the training backgrounds of our professors! We offer over 70 predominantly international and interdisciplinary degree programmes across five faculties. It may not be immediately apparent whether your profile is a good fit for Bremen City University of Applied Sciences – but the exact description, i.e., the ‘denomination’ of the advertised professorships, is always decisive. This may only cover a sub-field or specialisation of a subject, which would appear to be the rule rather than the exception, especially in interdisciplinary degree programmes. You can always find more detailed information on the exact professional focus of the professorship in the corresponding job description.

No, a professorship at a UAS offers the opportunity to continue working outside the university on a part-time basis for a maximum of 8 hours per week. In accordance with the regulations on secondary employment, this must be reported to the university and there must be no conflict of interest with your actual work as a professor. This allows you to combine practical experience and university work in the best possible way – ideally, both sides benefit.

Your professional experience, doctorate or teaching experience gained abroad is highly valued at Bremen City University of Applied Sciences. If applicable, recognition of equivalence must be obtained from the state authorities or an individual assessment must be carried out. Further information and advice are provided here.
